The northeastern region or Isaan region occupies about one-third of the country in both area and population. One of its distinctive features is the rich cultural heritage that has been passed down through generations over a long period. Various organizations have been making efforts to study, research, and preserve this cultural heritage, but there is still no continuous commitment from any organization to provide education and develop these arts and cultures. The people in the northeastern region face economic challenges, making it difficult to mobilize existing resources for these endeavors. Khon Kaen University, as the highest educational institution in the northeastern region, is deemed necessary to take responsibility in this regard. This involves establishing a Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts to decentralize educational opportunities in accordance with state policies.
The Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts, Khon Kaen University received royal endorsement through a royal decree on September 13, 1994. The objectives of the faculty are:
1. To produce graduates in the field of Fine and Applied Arts with knowledge and skills for effective work in both public and private sectors, with a consciousness of the cultural values of the northeastern region. The faculty aims to produce postgraduate experts in international and local arts specific to the northeastern region.
2. To serve as a center for international research on local folk arts in the northeastern region.
3. To be a center for academic services in various branches of Fine and Applied Arts to both local and international societies.
4. To collaborate with various public and private organizations for the conservation, promotion, and development of the local culture of the northeastern region.
Graduates of this institution will not only have expertise in Fine and Applied Arts but will also play a crucial role in the conservation, research, and in-depth study of the culture of the northeastern region. Simultaneously, the institution will act as a center for educational research, collaborative research, and coordination with various public and private organizations, both nationally and internationally, in an efficient manner.
